ABOUT MALDONMaldon is an historic gold mining town located in Victoria’s central highlands, approximately 140kms from Melbourne. It is Victoria’s first notable town. The area is easily accessible for day trips but also perfect for an extended stay. History is ever present in Maldon, from the intact gold rush architecture to the old digging sites dotted around the town. It is not hard to imagine Maldon in its bustling heyday. We have numerous wineries, most with tastings and cellar door sales, producing award- winning wines in the immediate area. The central highlands is considered to be the “Hot Rod” center of Australia. With regular swap meets, and “show and shines” held locally, not to mention the historic “Mt Tarrengower Hill Climb” held in late October. Cup Week sees the annual “Maldon Folk Festival” a 4 day coming together of the best folk musicians around Australia, bringing the streets of Maldon to life with music, poets, instrument makers, buskers, market stalls, dance and various workshops. Accommodation for all tastes and budgets is available in Maldon from on site vans and motel rooms to high end B&Bs, so you are bound to find something that suits you. Victorian Goldfields Railway runs a regular service from Maldon to Castlemaine. It also runs the very popular “Friends of Thomas” weekends.
